The journey
Essaouira is a fortified port on the Atlantic, all white walls, blue shutters and wind — cooler than Marrakech in every season. It is 185 km from Marrakech, about 2 h 45 of driving. Your driver will stop on the way whenever you ask.
The drive crosses the argan plateau and is flat, fast and easy — the one where people usually sleep. It is the most common day trip out of Marrakech, and going and coming back in a day is comfortable if you leave by nine. Take a jacket whatever the season: the Atlantic wind is what keeps the town cool and it does not stop for summer.
